Course overrides

Override requests

When a student isn’t able to enroll in a course, they may need to request an override.

Types of override requests

Prerequisite override

  • When you have not completed the required prerequisite course or the prerequisite course has not yet posted to your ASU record.
  • Required for consideration: Permission from the instructor or evidence that the prerequisite course is complete or in-progress.

Class full or seats reserved

  • When there are no additional seats remaining in a course or any remaining seats have been reserved.
  • Required for consideration: Permission from the instructor.

Instructor or department permission

  • When an instructor must approve prior to registration.
  • Required for consideration: Permission from the instructor.

Time conflict

  • When two or more courses overlap.
  • Required for consideration: Permission from all instructors of overlapping courses.

School of Art courses

For any ARA, ARE, ARS, ART or FSH course, use one of two methods listed below when requesting permission into the class. In either case you must obtain instructor’s permission and submit the School of Art override authorization form by filling out the online request form. Please note that class reserve overrides will not be granted.

Contact the instructor directly when the instructor’s name is listed:

  1. Contact the course instructor via email with your written request, including the reason for needing an override. Faculty directory is linked to the instructor's name in the class search.
  2. Fill out the course override request online through the School of Art override form and attach the faculty approval email.
  3. Allow 1-2 business days for processing. You will be notified by the School of Art via email when you have permission to register. After the second business day, if you have not received an email follow up with the School of Art by sending an email to SOAAdmin@asu.edu.

When the instructor’s name is not listed in the class search:

    • Early in the enrollment cycle, art classes may have “Staff” listed in place of the instructor’s name. In such cases, you need to contact the School of Art directly by sending an email to SOAAdmin@asu.edu who will direct you to a faculty member who is authorized to issue the override. Once you have that information, follow the method explained above.

School of Arts, Media and Engineering courses

If an AME or MDC course is full, if there is a time conflict, or you need a pre-requisite override, use the following procedures:

  1. Email the instructor of the course requesting permission to take the course.
  2. Forward the approval email including the approved override authorization form to the digital culture advisor who will then enter the override or obtain the instructor’s signature on the override form and submit the completed form to the Herberger Institute advising office (CDS 101). The request must include your name, student ID, and the course prefix and number, title and the five-digit class number.
  3. After the override has been processed, you will add the course to your schedule via your My ASU account or through University Registrar Services.

If an AME or MDC course requires department consent or lists other special notes requiring permission to register, you need to contact Althea.Pergakis@asu.edu, the digital culture education coordinator. The education coordinator will review your request and enter the override if approved.
